Root Canal Therapy Postoperative Instructions
Please adhere to the following guidelines and feel free to reach out to us if you have any queries or concerns.
- Refrain from eating or drinking for the initial 30 minutes following your treatment. Avoid touching the treated tooth area with your tongue to allow the temporary filling ample time to solidify.
- If prescribed medications, promptly fill and take them as directed. In the absence of prescriptions, you may opt for ibuprofen-based medications like Motrin or Advil (unless allergic) to manage discomfort and swelling. Alternatively, Tylenol can be used within label guidelines. If pain persists, please contact our office.
- To reduce swelling, apply a cold compress near the treated area. Use an ice pack with a cloth barrier between the skin and ice, applying for up to 20 minutes every 20 minutes for the next 6-8 hours, as needed.
- After resuming eating and drinking, avoid chewing on the treated area until the permanent restoration is placed. The temporary filling or crown is susceptible to fracturing from hard substances, so steer clear of chewing hard items like peanuts, hard candy, or ice cubes.
- Maintain cleanliness by gently brushing and flossing the treated area regularly. While rare, temporary fillings may divot but rarely fall out. If one does fall out, contact your dentist promptly or use temporary filling material from a pharmacy until seen in our office.
- Some discomfort for 2 to 4 days following root canal therapy is normal. In rare cases, soreness may persist for a few weeks. Continue regular brushing and flossing unless instructed otherwise and follow all prescribed medication guidelines.
